Everstream’s Network Operations Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Whether it’s 2 am on a summer night or right in the middle of your Sunday dinner, we’re here. And we’ve seen a lot.
Interestingly, one of the most commonly asked questions fielded by our NOC engineers is how to run an accurate server speed test.
Our #1 tip: Connect to Everstream’s equipment while running a network speed test.
Bypassing your internal networking equipment and connecting directly to the equipment Everstream has provided removes outside variables from the equation and allows the test to deliver a more accurate result of your business internet connection.
Here are some additional pointers to keep in mind to ensure your local network speed test is accurate.
- Public speed test servers are just that: public. A connection that is routing to an oversaturated server, for example, could render a poor result. With that said, if you’re going to try a public server, speedtest.net, fast.com and Google speed test are good options — and taking the average of all three will provide a solid baseline.
- A speed test shows your available bandwidth. For example, if Windows is running an update in the background using 10 Mb of internet, your test will not reflect your full speeds, as that portion of your connection is in use. For the best result, the circuit being tested should not be in use during an internet server speed test. So be sure to check for those pesky application updates and other background tasks!
- It’s highly unlikely to see a full 1 Gb speed test result from a public speed test server. In addition to the points listed above, there also is the increased possibility of overhead and other factors impacting your results.
Tip #2: Contact Everstream’s Network Operations Center
If you’ve taken each of these steps and still aren’t seeing the results you believe you should be, it’s time to reach out for help to check available bandwidth.
We highly recommend that you work with our Network Operations Center to perform an iPerf test on your internet connection. Interested in learning more? Feel free to reach out to the NOC — day or night — via these three ways:
